REI Access Medical Plan

REI is offering a new employee medical planREI Access Planto provide access to medical coverage to every employee who needs it at REI.

The REI Access Plan provides employee-only medical coverage after only three months of employment, no matter how many hours you work. The new plan is an addition to our existing health care plans that are available to employees who average 20 or more hours per week over the course of a 12-month evaluation period.

What Is New?

Effective January 1, 2023, all part-time employees will be eligible to enroll in the REI Access Plan beginning the first of the month following three months of employment with the co-op. You must make an election to have coverage in the REI Access Plan.

The REI Access Plan offers:

  • Part-time employees who aren’t eligible for our full benefits offering the ability to enroll in employee-only medical coverage.
  • Comprehensive medical coverage (including preventive care at no cost to employees with in-network providers, mental health benefits, hospital, physical therapy, etc.) pharmacy benefits and access to telehealth through Teladoc.
  • The opportunity to elect employee-only coverage, with access to a Health Savings Account (HSA) to allow employees to save pre-tax dollars through their paychecks to save for future health care expenses.
  • No average weekly hours requirement to become eligible to enroll.

What Is Staying the Same?

  • Your enrollment in the REI Access Plan must occur when you are initially eligible or during the Benefits Open Enrollment period.
  • Part-time employees can still become eligible for the full benefits offering by averaging 20 hours or more in a 12-month evaluation period. You can track your Average Weekly Hours in Employee Self Service by going to Menu > Myself > Personal > Status/Key Dates.

What Comes Next and How Do I Enroll?

Employees eligible for the new REI Access Plan will first be able to enroll in November 2022. This new medical plan is effective January 1, 2023.

Part-time employees, who are not eligible for the full benefits offering, with a hire date on:

  • September 30, 2022, or earlier, will be eligible to enroll in the REI Access Plan in November 2022. Enrollment reminders will be sent to employees’ work and home locations.
  • October 1, 2022, and later will be eligible for coverage the first of the month following three months of employment. Employees have 30 days from becoming eligible to elect coverage. HR will provide employees with specific enrollment instructions closer to their benefit eligibility dates.

The REI Access Plan offers employee-only medical coverage to employees who need it. It is a consumer-directed health plan (CDHP) administered by Aetna that allows you to pay lower payroll deductions to have medical coverage and requires a you to meet a higher deductible at time you use health services. This plan also offers a Health Savings Account (HSA) to allow you to save pre-tax dollars through your paycheck to save for future health care expenses.

Yes. Employees have 30 days from the date of a qualified life event (i.e., loss of coverage or gaining eligibility under another plan) to update their election. If they do not take action during the 30-day window, their next opportunity to make changes will be during annual Benefits Open Enrollment.

No. If you are offered medical coverage through another employer, you are not eligible to enroll in the REI Access Plan.

No. The REI Access Plan provides medical coverage to employees only.

Dependents aren’t eligible to be covered in the REI Access Plan. Spouses, life partners and/or child(ren) can be added to medical coverage when you become eligible for the full benefits offering (i.e., average 20 or more hours a week over a 12-month evaluation period).
